Alexander Zverev began his Roland Garros campaign with a 6-3 6-4 6-2 victory over Benjamin Bonzi.

The German was ruthless in victory over the out of sorts Frenchman as he recorded a straight sets win over Bonzi.

There have been some very consistent and good results from Zverev on the road to Roland Garros as he is the favourite to reach the semi-finals at minimum.

Speaking after his victory Zverev was happy with his start to the match which laid the foundations for the rest of the contest, “Phenomenal. It was an
awesome day,”
Zverev said in his press conference.

“I think it was a good start. It’s sometimes as simple as that. I won in three sets. It was an opening match against an opponent who can make it difficult against good players. He’s shown that in the past, and I handled it well. That’s what I’m the most happy about.”

Zverev will now face Tomas Machac in the second round after Machac comfortably defeated Zizou Bergs in straight sets.

Zverev leads the head-to-head 1-0 heading into Wednesday’s second round clash.

The other big headline in the men’s draw was Alejandro Davidovich Fokina battling from two sets to one down to defeat Damir Dzumhur in a four hour epic.

After the match Davidovich Fokina admitted he wasn’t feeling the best but was happy to advance at Roland Garros, “Well, today was a very tough match. I didn’t expect that it was going to be that hot today,” Davidovich Fokina said in his press conference.

“Yeah, I suffer a lot with this heat. Since the beginning, I was not feeling very good. Yeah, in the middle of the game I needed to change a little bit my plans, because physically I was struggling today a little bit. Yeah, at the end, I was a little bit lucky playing two, three shots. Today I make a lot of winners.

“Yeah, grateful, because you don’t know when after these matches you don’t know what is coming next. So now I have two days to recover, good my body, and it’s going to be on Wednesday, like, the first one. I’m going to feel like 100%. So that’s why I was pushing a little bit in the fifth set that I just need to push a little bit harder and, yeah, to think that I’m going to make it.”

Davidovich Fokina will now face Thiago Agustin Tireante for a place in the third round on Wednesday.
