Lorenzo Musetti has suffered another injury blow after a medical examination ruled him out of the French Open.
The world No.10 has been forced to withdraw from the Grand Slam after being diagnosed with a rectus femoris injury that requires ‘several weeks’ of recovery. It is better known as a thigh strain or tear that usually occurs in the upper part of the thigh. Musetti’s announcement followed his 6-3, 6-1 loss to Casper Ruud at the Italian Open on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters after the match, he said ‘the future of the season is foggy’ amid his ongoing issues.
It is understood that the medical diagnoses of Musetti’s latest issue came after he made those comments. He will exit the world’s top 10 next week and will fall further down the rankings due to not being able to defend his semi-final points from last year at the French Open.
“After yesterday’s match, I underwent medical examinations which revealed a rectus femoris injury, requiring several weeks of rest and recovery,” Musetti said in a statement posted on Instagram.
“Unfortunately, this means I won’t be able to compete in Hamburg and Roland Garros — news that is incredibly hard to take.
“A huge thank you to the Rome crowd for your incredible support: that’s exactly why, despite not being 100%, I chose to step on court and give everything I had in my home tournament.” He added.
Musetti has been hampered by injury throughout the 2026 season. At the Australian Open, he was leading Novak Djokovic by two sets before having to retire due to an upper leg issue. Then he was ruled out of the Miami Masters due to an arm problem.
Prior to his trio of physical issues, 24-year-old Musetti had made strong progress on the Tour and had reached the quarter-finals or better at every Grand Slam tournament. Last year, he contested three ATP Finals, including the Monte Carlo Masters. He was also runner-up in his first tournament of this year at the Hong Kong Open.
Musetti hasn’t commented on when he plans to return to the Tour.
