Jannik Sinner believes it is crucial that he and his compatriots capitalise on a new milestone set on Monday.

For the first time in ATP rankings history, Italy has four men ranked in the top 20, with Sinner leading the way at No.2 in the world. The others are Lorenzo Musetti (No.5), Flavio Cobolli (No.14) and Luciano Darderi (No.18). In recent years, the European nation has enjoyed a surge in success, with many linking it to their well-established Challenger circuit, which is a stepping stone to the ATP Tour. Italy has also won the last three Davis Cup tournaments, which is a run that hasn’t been matched by any other country since the early 1970s.

“This is an important moment, and we need to make the most of it,” Corriere dello Sport quoted Sinner as telling reporters in Miami.

“There’s a lot of hard work behind the scenes from each player’s team. Tennis is an individual sport, so everyone has their own way of training, preparing, and performing on the court. Everyone is finding the right balance, and that’s why we’ve seen so many good results.

“There’s a lot of support from home in Italy; we feel it, and that’s the most important thing.”

Three out of the Italian quartet will be hoping for success this week at the Miami Masters, which is currently running behind schedule due to poor weather. Musetti isn’t playing in the event after withdrawing with a right arm injury.

After recently triumphing at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Sinner has a shot at claiming the Sunshine double (winning back-to-back titles in Indian Wells and Miami). It has been achieved by seven men before, but the last to do so was Roger Federer in 2017.

“I’m happy to be here in Miami. It’s an important tournament for me and it’s the last one before the clay-court season,”said Sinner.

“Plus, it’s similar to Indian Wells, and I missed it last year. I’ll give it my all as always, and then we’ll see how it goes.”

“I played for 45 minutes yesterday (Tuesday) just to get a little movement, but it’s hard to say what kind of conditions I found. The weather here isn’t great; let’s see how it goes over the next few days.”

Sinner won Miami in 2024 and was runner-up on two other occasions. He missed the tournament last year because of a 90-day suspension for an anti-doping violation.

His opening match in this year’s tournament will be against either Bosnia’s Damir Dzumhur or Peru’s Ignacio Buse.
