Italy secures its lead in the Davis Cup Nations Ranking after the third triumph in a row

Italy has secured its leading position in the Davis Cup Nations Ranking after being crowned world champions for the third year in a row. The Italian team leads over semifinalists Germany and finalists Spain. 

Italy rose to world number 1 spot following the win in the 2023 Davis Cup against Australia. It was the second Davis Cup title and the first since 1976. The team captained by Filippo Volandri has remained at the top of the ranking since then. They claimed their fourth title in Bologna by beating Spain last weekend in front of a sell-out crowd.

Italy becomes the first team to win three consecutive titles in the Post-Challenge Era in 1972. It was a remarkable achievement for Italy, who triumphed despite the absence of top ten players Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti. 

Italy has become the first non Grand Slam nation to win the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup titles in the same season on multiple occasions, following the United States and Australia. 

Berrettini beat Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta in the final recording his 11th Davis Cup singles win in a row. The Italian player has not lost a singles match since his defeat against Taylor Fritz in the Final Group Stage in 2019. 

Cobolli beat Belgium’s Zizou Bergs in the semifinal after contesting the sixth longest tie-break in Davis Cup history.

Italy is one of ten nations to have held the number 1 spot since the introduction of the Davis Cup Nations Rankings in 2001, alongside Argentina, Australia, Canada, Croatia, Czechia, France, Great Britain, Russia and Spain. 

Spain finished runner-up to Italy this year to climb seven places from number 10 to number 3, the team’s highest ranking since 2023. 

Spain was competing in he Davis Cup Finals title match for the first time since their triumph in 2019. The former champions beat Czechia and Germany en route to the final. 

Germany has risen one place to number 2 in the Davis Cup rankings after reaching the semifinals in the past two years. 

Australia drops two places to number 4, while Belgium moves up six places from number 11 to number 5 aftre reaching the semifinal in Bologna last week. The Belgian team was last ranked inside the top 5 in March 2022.
