Jannik Sinner beats Zizou Bergs to secure his spot in the Round of 16 in Paris

Jannik Sinner started his campaign at the Paris Rolex Masters with a 6-4 6-2 win over Belgium’s Zizou Bergs in 1 hour and 27 minutes at the Defense Arena in the French capital. Sinner has extended his winning streak on indoor courts to 22 consecutive matches. 

Sinner did not face any break points and converted three of his eleven break points. The world number 2 hit 19 winners to 22 unforced errors and won 77% of his serve pounts. Bergs had a ratio of 16 winners to 30 unforced errors. 

Sinner converted his fifth break point in a 12-minute first game to take a 1-0 lead. Bergs saved two break points in the third game to hold for 1-2. 

Sinner held on his serve and hit a service winner at 5-4 to close out the first set on his first set point in 51 minutes. 

Sinner converted his third break point in the first game of the second set with a volley winner at the net. The Australian Open and Wimbledon champion held two service games and broke serve at love in the fifh game to open a 4-1 lead after Bergs made a backhand error. Sinner served out the second set 6-2 with a hold at 15 in the eighth game to book his spot in the Round of 16. Sinner has a chance to return to world number 1 spot by winning the Paris Masters 1000 title. 

Sinner set up a match against Francisco Cerundolo, who overcame Miomir Kecmanovic 7-51-6 7-6 (7-4). 

Jannik Sinner: “I felt like mostly the movement was good. It’s a very unique court here. Usually I always struggled a bit, so I’m very happy to come through the first match. I’m very happy how I served today. I was very precise, and I also started off with a break straight away, which gives you a bit more confidence. I’m very happy about today’s performance.”
