Felix Auger Aliassime edged past Marin Cilic 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-2) to reach the quarter final at the Swiss Indoors in Basel. Last year Auger Aliassime lost to eventual Giovanni Mpetchi Perricard to lose his only match across his three appearances in Basel.
Auger Aliassime drew level to 3-3 in his head-to-head matches against Cilic.
Both players held on serve in the first set. Cilic saved two break points in the 11th game. Auger Aliassime earned two mini-breaks to take a 5-1 lead. Cilic pulled one mini-break back for 2-5. Auger Aliassime earned two mini-breaks to win the tie-break 7-2.
The second set also went on serve with no break points. Auger Aliassime went up a 3-0 lead with two mini-breaks. Cilic pulled a mini-break back for 1-3. Auger Aliassime won the final three points to close out the tie-break 7-2.
Auger Aliassime set up a quarter final match against Jaume Munar, who beat last year’s Basel finalist Ben Shelton 6-3 6-4 to achieve the fourth top 10 win of his career.
Auger Aliassime remains ninth in the ATP Live Race to Turin. The Canadian player is just 400 points behind seventh placed Alex De Minaur and 290 points behind Lorenzo Musetti.
Munar earned his first break in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead. Shelton saved three break points as he was serving to stay in the set. Munar served out the first set 6-3 with a hold at love in the ninth game.
Munar converted his second break point in the seventh break point to take a 4-3 lead. The Spanish player served out the win on his second match point in the 10th game.
Ugo Humbert beat Taylor Fritz 6-3 6-4 to improve to 10-1 at indoor ATP Tour events in 2025. Humbert converted two of five break points. The Frenchman won the ATP 250 title in Marseille and reached the finals in Paris last November and in Stockolm last week.
Casper Ruud beat Stan Wawrinka 6-3 6-4 to remain in contention for a spot in the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin. The Nowegian player is currently 11th in the Live Race to Turin.
Wawrinnka broke serve in the third game of the first set to take a 2-1 lead. Ruud converted his second break-back point in the fourth game to draw level to 2-2. Ruud earned his second break in the 10th game to win the first set 6-4.
Wawrinka broke serve in the third game of the second set and held serve at 15 to take a 3-1 lead. Ruud pulled the break back in the sixth game to draw level to 3-3. Both players went on serve in the next games en route to the tie-break. Ruud earned a mini-break to a 2-1 lead. Wawrinka pulled the break back to draw level to 2-2. Ruud earned his second his second mini-break to win the tie-break 7-5.
Denis Shapovalov beat Valentin Royer 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 to set up a quarter final against last year’s Next Gen Finals champion Joao Fonseca.
