Number 8 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina beat Lorenzo Sonego 7-6 (7-2) in 2 hours and 4 minutes at the Swiss Open in Basel to set up a second round match against Jenson Brooksby.
Sonego won 12 of the first 13 points and earned an early break in the second game to open up a 3-0 lead. The Italian player saved two break-back in the fifth game. Davidovich Fokina converted his second break point in the seventh game and held serve at 15 in the eighth game to draw level to 4-4. Sonego saved a break point in the ninth game to hold serve for 5-4. Both players won their next service games en route to the tie-break. Davidovich Fokina won five consecutive points from 2-2 including three mini-breaks to close out the tie-break 7-2.
Davidovich Fokina saved a break point in the first game of the second set. Sonego fended off a break point in the fourth game to hold serve after three deuces. Davidovich Fokina broke serve at 15 in the 10th game on his first match after 63 minutes, as Sonego was serving to stay in the match.
