Alex de Minaur stormed into the quarterfinals of the US Open on Monday with a commanding 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Swiss qualifier Leandro Riedi.
Number 8 seed De Minaur needed just one hour and 33 minutes to seal his spot in the last eight, breaking Riedi eight times and extending his hard-court win tally to a Tour-leading 28 in 2025.
The 26-year-old Australian, ranked No. 8 in the world, delivered a clean and focused performance. He struck 21 winners while limiting himself to 21 unforced errors, a sharp contrast to Riedi’s 39 errors. De Minaur was ruthless on return, converting eight of 15 break points, and kept control throughout despite dropping serve twice.
“I’m super proud of what I’m doing,” de Minaur said. “Ultimately, this is where I want to be, playing for the big titles. I want to be in contention. I’m putting myself in the right places, and I’ve got another great opportunity coming up in the quarterfinals. I’m gonna go out there and have a swing.”
Riedi, ranked No. 435, had been one of the surprise stories of the tournament after coming through qualifying to reach the fourth round at a Grand Slam for the first time. His run was all the more remarkable after two knee surgeries in the past year, but by Monday he appeared physically drained and even showed signs of a leg issue late in the match. Despite the defeat, his performance in New York is projected to lift him more than 250 places in the rankings to No. 164.
The victory sends de Minaur into his sixth Grand Slam quarterfinal, his third at the US Open. He joins Lleyton Hewitt, John Newcombe, and Ken Rosewall as the only Australian men in the Open Era to reach at least three quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows. Still, he has yet to break through to the semifinals at a major.
Next, de Minaur will face either Russia’s Andrey Rublev or Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime on Wednesday, as he looks to push into uncharted territory in New York.
