Taylor Fritz and Daniil Medvedev suffered shock exits at the Mubadala Citi Open as they fell short of a place in the semi-finals.
There would be no semi-final for Fritz in Washington in what was his first tournament since reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals.
The American lost in a three hour battle to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina as he lost 7-6(3) 3-6 7-5 with the Spaniard relieved to have come through a tough test, “Today I was lucky,” Davidovich Fokina told the ATP website.
“He was serving for the match, I was two points down from going to the locker room and go to Toronto. I am very happy how I fought for today.”
Now Fritz heads to Toronto as he prepares for a US Open title defence in a month’s time and joining Fritz in Canada is Daniil Medvedev.
Medvedev lost an eventful three set battle to Corentin Moutet, 1-6 6-4 6-4 earlier in the day session.
It was an eventful contest which saw both players needing medical treatment and an hour delay because of lightening.
However, when they came back Medvedev lost the last game of the match and fell to defeat in the American capital.
Now Moutet will face Alex De Minaur in the semi-finals while Davidovich Fokina takes on Ben Shelton in the other semi-final.
