Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff are on a mission to set up a quarter-final meeting at this year’s US Open after the draw paired them in the same quarter.
It was in Cincinnati when Coco Gauff secured her first win over the world number one in eight meetings as she claimed her first WTA 1000 title of her career.
Now the two could be set to meet in a rematch with the draw pairing them in the same quarter as Swiatek looks to defend her title in New York.
Before they can think about a quarter-final meeting, Swiatek will play Rebecca Peterson in her opening while Gauff begins against a qualifier with a potential meeting against teen sensation Mirra Andreeva awaiting in the second round.
Other potential obstacles in the opening quarter include Jelena Ostapenko, Petra Kvitova and Magda Linette while Caroline Wozniacki will face a qualifier in her opening round.
In the same half of the draw, former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina awaits with the Kazakh beginning her campaign against Marta Kostyuk.
Should Rybakina get past Kostyuk then the likes of Sorana Cirstea and Belinda Bencic could await before a meeting in the last eight with Maria Sakkari, who faces Rebeka Masarova in her opening round.
The other headline first round match in the second quarter will see Beatriz Haddad Maia take on former champion Sloane Stephens.
In the bottom half of the draw, Jessica Pegula will start her search for Grand Slam glory with a tough opening round match against Camila Giorgi.
The American could face Elina Svitolina in round three before facing Madison Keys or Liudmila Samsonova in the last 16.
Caroline Garcia is Pegula’s potential quarter-final opponent as she starts with a qualifier before potentially facing Katie Boulter.
Former finalist Leylah Fernandez will face 22nd seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in her opener before facing compatriot and former champion Bianca Andreescu in the second round.
Finally Ons Jabeur and Aryna Sabalenka appear in the final quarter with the pairing facing Camila Osorio and Maryna Zanevska in the opening round respectively.
