Rafael Nadal is ‘excited’ about returning to competition next year, according to his former longtime coach.

Toni Nadal, a key member of his nephew’s team throughout his career until 2017, has told reporters that the former world No.1 is currently in good health and is eager to begin his comeback. Nadal hasn’t played a Tour match since his second round defeat at the Australian Open in January due to a hip injury. In May he confirmed that he will take a extended break to heel his body and admitted that it is likely that he will retire from the sport next year.

Since speaking about his future during a press conference in his home country, the 37-year-old has kept himself out of the limelight. However, on Wednesday his uncle gave a brief update on the 22-time Grand Slam winner whilst attending the Castilla y León Open. A Challenger event in Spain that Nadal won in 2003.

“Rafa is fine, on vacation, wanting to jump onto the court in 2024. Let’s hope that (Carlos) Alcaraz will let us win something then,” Toni commented.
He is excited to return and retire on the court.” He added.

Toni’s remarks coincided with him being presented with a replica of the trophy Nadal received when he won the Challenger tournament 20 years ago. That triumph was the first time he won a hardcourt title at an event ranked at Challenger level or above.

“Winning the Challenger, which was said to be the best in the world, was important to us. It served us well as a good preparation for the US Open. We are very grateful for the effort of everyone who organizes tournaments of this level,” said Toni.

There had been speculation that Nadal might try to return to competition at the end of the season by representing his country in the Davis Cup Finals. However, it is unclear if this is still the case.

Nadal has won 92 ATP titles during his career, including 36 Masters 1000 events and a record 14 French Open tournaments. He has earned more than $134M in prize money.
