While waiting for the Archbishop of Canterbury to crown King Charles III and Camilla, the queen consort, on May 6th in London, tennis has just presided over the coronation of its king: Novak Djokovic 374. That’s exactly the number of weeks Djokovic has spent in the top spot of the ATP rankings. He just needs four more to smash the all-time record in men’s and women’s tennis held by Steffi Graf.

The first Major of 2023 has definitely had a big impact on this week’s ATP top 20 rankings:-

A few comments:

  • The only position which has remained unchanged is seventh, which is still occupied by Felix Auger-Aliassime.
  • Rafael Nadal loses 4 places and he is currently sidelined from the tour by injury. Considering his extraordinary start to the first part of the 2022 season with a 20-match winning streak, he is due to slip further down in the coming weeks.
  • Daniil Medvedev, the 2022 Australian Open runner-up, drops out of the top 10 after 42 months of uninterrupted attendance.
  • Holger Rune rises to  No. 9, a new career highest.
  • Matteo Berrettini falls out of the top 20 and is now 22nd.
  • Tommy Paul, after reaching the semifinals in Melbourne, makes his debut in the top 20.
  • A second round appearance at the Australian Open is enough to grant Lorenzo Musetti a new career best in 18th position.
  • Nick Kyrgios is back in the top 20.
  • Djokovic and Nadal are the only tennis players born in the 80s who are in the top 10. The others were born between 1997 and 2003. Cameron Norrie is the flag bearer for the lost generation, made up of the players born between 1990 and 1995, who were most outclassed by the Big four.

NITTO ATP FINALS

The top 8 positions of the Race to Turin are almost entirely occupied by the Australian Open quarterfinalists. Only Rublev is missing, currently ranked 10th
