Borna Coric came back from a set and a break down to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7-4) in a re-match of the 2022 Cincinnati Open reaching the quarter final at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.
Coric beat Tsitsipas for the third consecutive time following his wins in the second round at the 2020 US Open after saving six match points and in the final of the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati.
Tsitsipas converted his fifth break point in the 10th game to win the opening set 6-4.
Tsitsipas lead by a set and 2-0 at the start of the second set. Coric broke straight back in the third game before saving a break point at 2-3. Coric won 15 consecutive points on serve and broke serve in the ninth game to win the second set 6-4.
Both players won deuce games to hold serve at the start of the third set. Coric converted his this break point in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. Tsitsipas broke straight back in the sixth game to draw level to 3-3. They held on their next service games en route to the tie-break. Coric earned the tie-break with a single mini-break to reach his fourth quarter final of the season and his second this month following Tokyo.
Coric has won 13 of his 16 matches since his triumph in Cincinnati, where he beat Tsitsipas 7-6 (7-0) 6-2.
Coric will face Hubert Hurkacz, who beat Emil Ruusuvuori 7-5 4-6 6-3. Grigor Dimitrov beat Andrey Rublev 6-3 6-4 setting up a quarter final against Marcos Giron, who beat Cameron Norrie 6-3 6-4.
