Emma Raducanu’s first full season on the WTA Tour is likely to have been cut short by injury after she was forced to pull out of next week’s Transylvania Open in Romania.
Organizers for the WTA 250 event issued a statement on Thursday morning confirming that the 2021 US Open champion will not be playing due to a wrist injury. The news comes just three days after a video starring Raducanu was published in which she announced her intention to play in Cluj for the second year in a row.
“Sadly, Emma Raducanu is forced to withdraw from the Transylvania Open due to a wrist injury. Get well fast, Emma! We’re looking forward to seeing you soon,” the tournament said in a statement.
Raducanu’s upcoming participation at the Guadalajara Open is also in doubt. She was initially on the entry list but it is understood that her name is no longer present. However, this is yet to be officially confirmed by either the tournament or Raducanu herself.
A wrist problem is the latest in a series of physical issues that have hindered the 19-year-old throughout 2022. She has also problems with her leg, side and back. Then during the US Open, she was troubled by persistent blisters on her right hand.
Raducanu has won 17 out of 35 matches played this season with her best tournament result occurring last month when she reached the semi-finals of the Korean Open before retiring injured from her match against Jelena Ostapenko. She also reached the quarter-finals of the Citi Open in Washington and the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.
The last match Raducanu played was on Tuesday in Ostrava where she lost in two tight sets to Russia’s Daria Kasatkina. It is unclear as to when she developed her wrist problem.
After reaching a ranking high of 10th back in July, Raducanu now finds herself in 67th position. She is yet to make any public comment regarding her wrist injury.
