Matteo Berrettini’s rehabilitation from a hand surgery means he will miss all of the pre-Roland Garros tournaments.

The Italian announced the surgery after losing in the third round at Indian Wells to Miomir Kecmanovic.

Berrettini has endured a tough run of results after reaching the Australian Open semi-finals, losing to eventual champion Rafael Nadal.

Now last year’s Wimbledon finalist has announced he will miss Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome due to the rehab process that he will go through over the next few weeks.

Announcing the news on Instagram Berrettini said it was imperative to make this decision in order to remain at the top of the sport for years to come.

The question now is whether Berrettini will want to play Roland Garros without any matches or whether the Italian will skip the second grand slam of the year to prepare for Wimbledon.

The world number six will lose some big points regardless of the decision especially with Madrid quarter-final points coming off his ranking.

Roland Garros starts on the 22nd of May.
