Marton Fucsovics battled past Fabio Fognini 6-1 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (7-5) in 2 hours and 44 minutes to set up a second round clash against world number 1 Novak Djokovic at the Rolex Paris Masters in Paris Bercy
Fucsovics broke twice in the second and fourth games to cruise through to a 6-1 win in the first set.
After a trade of breaks in the first two games of the second set, Fucsovics went a break in the first game to take a 3-2 lead. Fognini pulled the break back to draw level to 3-3. Fognini won the tie-break 8-6 after saving a match point at 5-6 on serve after Fucsovics was not able to control a lob.
Fognini went up a 2-0 lead with a break in the first game of the third set, but Fucsovics pulled back on serve in the fourth game to draw level to 2-2. Fognini earned his break in the ninth game to take a 5-4 lead, but Fucsovics broke straight back to draw level to 5-5. Fognini earned a mini-break to take a 3-2 lead. Fucsovics came back by winning two four points to earn three match points at 6-3. Fognini saved two match points, but Fucsovics converted his third chance with an ace.
Ilya Ivashka hit 15 aces to beat Albert Ramos Vinolas 6-3 7-6 (7-2) to set up a second round match against defending champion Danil Medvedev. Dusan Lajovic beat Mackenzie McDonald 6-3 6-4 securing a spot in the second round match against Alexander Zverev, who won the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo, two Masters 1000 titles in Madrid and Cincinnati and the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna last week.
