The 78th edition of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia will be held from 8 to 16 May at the Foro Italico in Rome will have 25% capacity crowd from the Round of 16 stage onwards. The tournament was officially presented to the press in Rome.
The tournament will feature COVID-19 precautions such as social distancing, face masks and santisers.
“It is the responsbility of the local health authorities to define the details of the operational aspects useful for a better implementation of the measures for the prevention and containment of the infection”, said Italian Sport Undersecretary Valentina Vezzali.
Nineteen of the top 20 players feature in the star-studded line-up. Five-time Rome champion Novak Djokovic leads the field, which also includes Rafael Nadal, who nine titles in eleven finals, world number 3 Danil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, who leads the ATP Race to Turin and won the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, Alexander Zverev, who won in Rome in 2017 and reached the final in 2018, Andrey Rublev, who won in Rotterdam and reached the final in Monte-Carlo, and the best Italian players Matteo Berrettini (winner in Belgrade), Jannik Sinner (finalist in Miami and semifinalist in Barcelona), Fabio Fognini (Monte-Carlo champion in 2019), Lorenzo Sonego (finalist in Vienna in 2019).
The first three wild cards have been awarded to Stefano Travaglia, Salvatore Caruso, Lorenzo Musetti. The final wild card will be given to either Marco Cecchinato or Gianluca Mager depending on the results of the Madrid Mutua Open tournament.
