German player Jan Lennard Struff beat Slovenian lucky loser Andrej Martin 6-4 6-3 in 76 minutes to move into the second round of the BMW Open in Munich.
Struff earned the first break of the match in the sixth game of the first set to take a 4-2 lead. Martin broke straight back at love in the seventh game to draw level to 4-4, but Struff broke for the second game in the 10th game to claim the first set 6-4. Struff broke serve in the second game at love to win the second set 6-3.
Struff came back from one set down to beat his compatriot Dominik Koepfer, who came back from one set down to beat three-time Munich champion Phillip Kohlschreiber 4-6 6-4 6-3 after 2 hours and 24 minutes.
Kohlschreiber broke serve at love in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Koepfer broke straight back to draw level to 2-2. Kohlschreiber earned his second break point in the seventh game to win the first set 6-4. Both players traded breaks twice in the second set. Koepfer saved a break point before breaking serve in the 10th game to win the second set 6-4.
Koepfer converted his fourth break point in the second game to take a 2-0 lead. Kohlschreiber broke straight back on his fifth opportunity in the third game, but Koepfer earned his second break at love to take the third set 6-3.
US qualifier Mackenzie McDonald broke once in each set in his 6-4 6-4 win over 2019 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters finalist Dusan Lajovic. McDonald, who dropped just games in two qualifying matches, set up a second round match against Ilya Ivashka, who won a set against Rafael Nadal in Barcelona last week.
Pablo Cuevas overcame two-time Australian Open quarter finalist Tennys Sandgren 7-4 (7-4) 0-6 6-1 to set up a second round match against 2021 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters semifinalist Casper Ruud.
Colombian qualifier Daniel Elahi Galan beat this year’s Miami Open quarter finalist Sebastian Korda 6-1 7-6 (9-7) after 1 hour and 27 minutes. Korda dropped nine consecutive games from 1-1 in the first set. As Galan was serving for the match Korda rallied from 2-5 down by winning four consecutive games. Galan claimed the tie-break 9-7, as Korda missed an overhead long. The 24-year-old Colombian player set up a match against 2021 Doha champion Nikoloz Basilashvili.
