Canadian tennis star Bianca Andreescu says her foot injury is ‘not serious’ but has withdrawn from an event set to take place later this month.
The former US Open champion was forced to retire during the second set of her clash with Ash Barty in the final of the Miami Open after taking a tumble on the court. During one rally Andreescu went over on her foot and underwent a medical time out before calling it quits a game later. Miami was only the third tournament she has played following a year-long absence due to a knee problem.
Giving an update on her current condition, the 20-year-old confirmed on Instagram that she will be back to the Tour ‘very soon.’ Although she has decided to withdraw from the Billie Jean King Cup in what is a blow to the Canadian team who will be playing Serbia from April 16-17 in Kraljevo.
“I’m relieved to say that there is no serious injury and with some rest and preparation, I will be back very soon,” she wrote on Instagram.
“This does mean that, unfortunately, I won’t be able to compete in the Billie Jean Cup. I love representing Canada, so this decision was not easy but I want to make sure I’m ready for the clay court swing ahead and for the rest of the season.”
Andreescu has won nine out of 12 matches played so far this season. In Miami she scored wins over Amanda Anisimova, Garbine Muguruza and Maria Sakkari. Elsewhere she reached the second round of the Australian Open and the semi-finals of the Phillip Island Trophy.
The world No.6 is hoping she will be able to continue her momentum on the clay over the coming months. She hasn’t played a tournament on the surface since the 2019 French Open.
“I love playing on clay. I feel very strong compared to last on clay this season,” she stated. “I’ve been putting a lot of work in, and that showed this week (in Miami) so I want to continue to do that. Hopefully I can do very well.” Andreescu told reporters on Saturday.
Andreescu has won three WTA titles so far in her career. Besides the US Open, she also triumphed in Indian Wells and at the Roger Cup during 2019.
