Jiri Vesely beats Lorenzo Sonego in three sets at the Sardinia Open

Jiri Vesely edged Lorenzo Sonego 6-4 3-6 6-1 after 2 hours and 15 minutes at the Sardinia Open at the Forte Village in Santa Margherita di Pula. 

Vesely broke serve in the opening game from 0-30 down and held his next service games to win the first set 6-4. Sonego earned a break point in the sixth game with a return winner in the sixth game after a long rally and converted his chance with a forehand passing shot. Vesely came back from 15-40 to 40-40 on Sonego’s serve, but the Italian player served out the second set at deuce. 

Vesely went up a double break to race out to a 5-0 lead. Sonego saved three match points in the sixth game and held serve after eight deuces for 1-5. Vesely served out at 15 in the seventh game. 

Vesely set up a quarter final match against Laslo Djere, who held off a late comeback to in his 6-4 7-5 win over Dusan Lajovic. Djere converted his fourth break point to take a 2-1 lead. Lajovic broke back in the sixth game to draw level to 3-3. Djere won the final three games with a break in the ninth game to win the first set 6-4. Djere broke in the first game to open up a 3-1 lead. Lajovic broke back in the sixth game to draw level to 3-3. Both players traded breaks in the ninth and tenth games to draw level to 5-5. Djere converted his fifth break point in the 11th game and served out the win on his second match point. 

Pablo Andujar came within two points of winning the match at 5-4 in the tie-break of the second set, but Federico Delbonis bounced back to win 5-7 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 in 2 hours and 45 minutes. 

Serbian lucky-loser Danilo Petrovic beat Roberto Carballes Baena 6-1 6-4 in 87 minutes.  Yannick Hanfmann eased past Salvatore Caruso 6-0 6-4. Corentin Moutet edged Frances Tiafoe 7-6 (7-0) 6-4.
