Diego Schwartzman is planning an extra training block after coronavirus outbreak causes tournaments to be cancelled.
Just like many other players, Diego Schwartzman had travelled to Los Angeles in hope of marking his return to action after an injury-hit South American clay swing.
However days later, the Argentinian would be booking a flight back home after Indian Wells would be cancelled a day before the tournament was due to take place.
This is as a result of the coronavirus outbreak hitting the world hard, with the virus now being described as a ‘pandemic.’
Speaking to ‘La Nacion’, Schwartzman admitted that he thought it was a joke, “I didn’t like (the way Indian Wells was cancelled), mostly because I landed in Los Angeles on Sunday and found out that it had been cancelled by messages from (coaches) Facundo Lugones and Fede Coria, who were there in the tournament.”
“I even looked if it wasn’t April Fool’s Day, I thought they were playing a joke on me. The next day, the healthiest thing, was to cancel the Miami Open.
“I understand that they took a few days, they also waited for the opinions of the players, the governments and everything that was happening, but the wisest thing was done.”
The sporting world now faces a unique situation as this outbreak has now forced the majority of sporting events to be postponed and cancelled as we wait to see how this outbreak will be controlled.
Now ahead of a six week break before the ATP World Tour is supposed to return, the 27 year-old prepares for a long training block, “We will pretend that the year has not started and we will prepare a preseason of three or four weeks,” Schwartzman said.
“We have to think that it will be a year a little shorter than normal and we have to adapt.”
The ATP World Tour is due to return on the 27th April with 250 events in Estoril and Munich, although that date could be seen as optimistic given the current situation.
