Not only did Stan Wawrinka book a place in the third round of the French Open for the first time in two years, he has also won praise for what he did following his match.

The three-time grand slam champion greeted fans after his dominant 6-1, 6-4, 6-0, win over Chile’s Christian Garin. A player who has won 20 matches on the clay this season. During his interaction, Wawrinka spotted an upset little boy and lifted him onto the court to console him. Hanging the child one of his own towels before helping him to find his father in the crowd.

“People were pushing too much, and he started to cry because he had some pain.” Wawrinka explained during his press conference.
“I took him out of that mess a little bit, and he was in pain and sad. I tried to make him feel better, give him a towel, and try to find his dad.”

This week Wawrinka is bidding to reach the fourth round a grand slam for the first time since his run to the final of the 2017 French Open. Reflecting on his latest win in Paris, the Swiss player insisted that he is not getting too carried away about his performance. It is the 11th time in his career he reached the last 32 at the tournament.

“I’m not giving myself a mark (out of 10). It was just a very complete and solid match from beginning to end, three sets against a very good player.” He commented about his win over Garin.
“I felt good, I moved well. I was aggressive when necessary. But it was a very good match. But you don’t know what will happen in two days. I’m very happy with my performance, but it’s still only the second round.”

Wawrinka will next play Grigor Dimitrov in what could be a blockbuster match. Dimitrov knocked out 11th seed Marin Cilic in a five-set thriller on Wednesday. It will be the third time within the past 12 months the two have clashed in a grand slam. Wawrinka won both of their meetings in 2018 at Wimbledon and the US Open.
