Garbine Muguruza has been hit by injury after pulling out of the San Jose Open shortly before her clash with Victoria Azarenka.
Muguruza was set to play her first match since losing in the second round at Wimbledon to Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck. She has withdrawn from the Silicon Valley Classic due to a right arm injury. Raising questions about if she will be fit in time for next week’s Rogers Cup. A Premier Five tournament that will be held in Montreal.
“I’ve been feeling some pain in my right arm for a couple of days and realized I am not ready to play the match, so hopefully I can recover for the next tournaments,” Muguruza said in a statement.
“The facilities in San Jose are very nice, especially the courts. This is a tournament I always play at the start of the US Open Series so I hope to come back and see all my fans next year.”
It is unclear as to how serious the injury is or if it will have any significant impact on Muguruza’s build up to the US Open at the end of this month. The Spanish world No.7 has won one title so far this season at the Monterrey Open in Mexico. She was also runner-up at the Qatar Total Open to Petra Kvitova.
“We were really looking forward to seeing Garbiñe compete here at the tournament, but the players’ health must always be the number one priority,” said tournament director Vickie Gunnarsson. “She’s one of the WTA’s bright young stars and we hope she is able to recover quickly.”
Muguruza, who has won 24 out of 36 matches played so far this year, is the latest high-profile player to be hampered by Injury. At the Citi Open, both Caroline Wozniacki and Nick Kyrgios has been forced to withdraw. Wozniacki has a leg injury and Kyrgios is currently struggling with his hip.
Anna Blinkova will replace Muguruza in the main draw. She will play two-time champion Azarenka later on Wednesday night.
