20-time grand slam champion Roger Federer made a ‘respectable’ decision to miss the entire clay season, according to world No.1 Rafael Nadal.

For the second consecutive year the Swiss will not play any ATP tournament on the dirt, including the French Open. Federer has made his decision in order to rest from the tour ahead of the Wimbledon Championships, where he will be bidding to win a record ninth title. In the first quarter of this season, he has won 17 out of 19 matches played on the tour. Claiming titles at the Australian Open and Rotterdam.

“I decided not to play the clay season,” he told reporters in March. “I am trying to figure things out now, I have some time. I’m a positive thinker, every match is another opportunity. You take a break, get away from it all, and get back to practice court and work.”

Speaking about the notable absence from the tour, Nadal argues that Federer’s strong performance on the grass last year is proof that his break is justifiable. The Spaniard, who has won more ATP titles on the clay than any other player, believes the ‘cost is too great’ for the 36-year-old on the clay.

“Yes, of course I understand it.” Nadal told madrid-open.com. “He must think that the cost is greater on clay, that he has amazing winning momentum and that on clay he could lose more matches and lose that invincible aura that he has on other surfaces.
“I think those two factors together have led to him taking that decision. It’s respectable, and as long as it works for him… In 2017 it was perfect, why would he change it?”

In their ATP Tour head-to-head, Nadal has clashed with Federer on the clay 15 times. He currently leads 13-2 and last lost his rival on the surface back in 2009 at the Madrid Open. It is at the Caja Magica in Madrid, where Nadal has his fondest memories of taking on Federer on the surface. The two locked horns for three consecutive years between 2009-2011, including two finals.

“I’ve played Federer a few times here (in Madrid). In 2009, 2010 and 2011. It’s practically impossible for Federer to play better on any surface or in any conditions, but it’s also true that clay may suit him a little more at altitude.” He said.
“Matches against him are always difficult, but in Madrid they are a little more so. They were special matches, and having been able to experience them at home is unique. Feeling the support of the whole stadium against your biggest rival is a very special thing.”

Next week, Nadal will be bidding to win his 78th ATP title in Madrid. An achievement that would move him past John McEnroe to fourth on the all-time list for most tour titles in the Open Era. Meanwhile, Federer isn’t expected to return to action until the Stuttgart Open in June.
