Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki now knows what it is like to take on a Beckham in the world of sport.
Over the weekend the former world No.1 held a private practice session with the 15-year-old son of David Beckham, Romeo. The two trained with each other on Sunday in Miami, where Wozniacki recently suffered a second round loss to Monica Puig. A video of the encounter was uploaded to Romeo’s Instagram account with many of his fans being impressed with his forehand.
The same video was also uploaded to the Instagram account of Romeo’s mother, former Spice Girl singer Victoria Beckham. Who captioned her post ‘Amazing night watching @romeobeckham hit with @carowozniackiin Miami X kisses x VB.’ The combined views of the two videos has mounted to almost 1 million in less than 24 hours of uploading.
Wozniacki is the latest in a series of high-profile players to train with the teenager. In the past he has also exchanged rallies with Andy Murray and Grigor Dimitrov. Last year Dimitrov described Romeo as a ‘talented’ player when the two met during the grass-court season.
“Romeo, he’s a very talented kid,” Dimitrov told reporters. “I think he hasn’t played tennis for that long, but he sure showed I think a lot of potential.
“It was very nice to spend some time off the court because I like to give a bit of my time as well when they really appreciate something like this.
“I just wanted to do something nice for him. He came to quite a few of my matches I think.
“I was glad to spend also some time with Victoria and get to know the family from close.”
Over the weekend, the Beckham family was spotted attending the Miami Open. Sitting in a private booth during John Isner’s win over Alexander Zverev in the final.
There is currently no concrete evidence to suggest that Romeo intends to follow in the footsteps of his father and become a professional athlete. Although he is heading in the right direction given the calibre of some of his hitting buddies.
