World No. 1 Roger Federer has made a startling revelation about his retirement, stating that he just can’t wait to retire from the game.
The reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon champion became the oldest No. 1 in tennis history on Monday after winning his third title in Rotterdam on Sunday. The 36-year-old overtook Rafael Nadal at the top of the men’s rankings. Federer admitted that even though he wasn’t thinking about retirement in the immediate future, in the long term he wanted to settle down with his family after hanging his racquet.
“In a way I can’t wait for it [retirement] but it should wait for the moment,” Federer told CNN.
“Times are great right now as a tennis player and these are great moments.
“After that I am happy, I have a great group of friends around me.
“I always know I’ll be fine once I retire and I’m home. I won’t get bored I don’t think.”
The Swiss maestro also said that he had experienced retirement during his six-month injury layoff from the sport in 2016. Federer was out of the sport due to a knee injury and subsequently made a spectacular return to action by winning the 2017 Australian Open, beating arch-rival Nadal in a marathon final in Melbourne.
“I got a little glimpse into it when I was out for six to eight months in 2016 and I actually enjoyed it a lot,” Federer added.
“Not having a schedule, being home for longer and of course doing work for my foundation.
“That is also where I am going to go very soon.
“On March 5 I will go to San Jose for the Roger Federer Foundation.
“That is something I was to spend more time on.
“I also want to spend more time in Switzerland and help my kids grow up and be in a more normal environment.”
