The Australian Open is as much as a test for Carlos Moya as it is for the player that he is mentoring on the tour, Rafael Nadal.

2018 marks the start of a new era in Nadal’s career. His-long-time coach, Toni Nadal, has stepped away from the limelight to focus on other commitments. Leaving Moya as one of the pivotal members in maintaining the health and fitness of the world No.1. Despite the change Moya, who was hired by Nadal back in December 2016, admits that Tony continues to be a strong influence on the team during an exclusive interview with Ubitennis.

“Having Tony beside us is great because he is the person who knows Rafa better than anybody else.” Said Moya.
“If I think Rafa is not playing well, I will talk with him.”

After delaying the start to his season due to his troublesome knee, Nadal appears to be back on track. Defeating Víctor Estrella Burgos and Leonardo Mayer in straight sets during the first two rounds of the Australian Open. The signs are promising for the top seed, who hasn’t won the Melbourne title since 2009. Although there are still some concerns remaining about his current form.

“I think he’s playing well. He is much better than a month ago during the off-season. He is still not 100%, but he’s getting better.” Evaluated Moya.
“We needed some time off, some time away, to take it step-by-step in order to try to achieve a successful this year (in 2018).”

On Friday the world No.1 will take on Bosnia’s Damir Džumhur. A player who won two ATP titles towards the end of last year. Besides Dzumhur, Nadal is set to face testing conditions with a mini heat wave striking Melbourne park. Raising the temperature to around 40 degrees. Yesterday the hot weather took its toll on Gael Monfils during his second round match, but Moya believes it shouldn’t be a factor for the 10-time French Open champion.

“I think he is going to be ready for that. He is not the oldest guy on the tour. At 31 you’re still fit, in good shape. I don’t think this is going to be a factor for him.” He said.

Moya’s full interview with Ubitennis can be seen below. In it, he discusses his unexpected path into coaching.
