London: After recording one of the biggest wins of his career at the ATP Finals, David Goffin proudly stated that there are two finals he is preparing for.
At The O2 Arena he became only the sixth person in history to defeat both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the same tournament. His latest triumph was over No.2 Federer, who he defeated from a set down. Ending his run of six consecutive losses on the tour to the 36-year-old.
“I started to feel the ball better at the end of the first set, so I wanted to be more aggressive. As soon as I had the chance to go for the shot from the return and from the serve (I did). That also was the key to go for the shot.” Goffin told reporters in London.
“It is the best win of my career, for sure.”
As a result of his win, Goffin has become the first Belgian player to reach the final of the tournament in its 48-year history. He will take on either Jack Sock or Grigor Dimitrov on Sunday. He has a winning head-to-head record against Sock (3-0), but not against Dimitrov (1-3).
“It’s another match. I have the chance to play another match, if it’s Grigor, against him. I hope to play the tennis I played today. I’ll try to be more aggressive, also go for the shots, and go for the trophy.” He explained.
“If it’s Jack, yeah, I won out last match in Basel. It was a good match. Was a late match, after midnight. Was not easy.” Goffin added.
Unlike the other players in the tournament, Goffin will not be starting his off-season when it ends. Instead, he will travel to France with the Belgian Davis Cup team. Bidding to win their first ever title in the history of the tournament. Concerns has been raised about if the packed end of season schedule is taking its toll on the 26-year-old, but he remains defiant.
“There is nothing negative in this period. I have to play the final in Davis Cup. I have to play the final here. It is something incredible.” The world No.8 said.
“The fatigue doesn’t mean anything. I just have to go for every match, every moment onf the court, enjoy that moment because it’s the biggest final of my career, here and in Davis Cup.’
“I will try to play match after match, give everything on the court like I’m doing for the moment.”
Goffin has played 22 singles matches in the Davis Cup since 2012, winning 19 of those.
The Davis Cup final between Belgium and France will start on Friday at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille.
