The world may have found out the gender of Serena Williams’ baby thanks to a casual comment from her sister Venus.
Venus conducted an interview with Eurosport following her win over Kurumi Nara at the French Open on Wednesday. Asking the questions was Patrick Montangelou, Serena’s current coach. During the highly entertaining interview, which featured them doing a duet of Destiny’s Childs ’say my name,’ Venus gave this response when asked about what the baby will call her.
“She’s going to call me her favourite aunt,” said Venus.
Further indications of Serena expecting a baby girl followed when Venus joked about what the name of the baby will be. Joking that her other sisters wants the baby to be named after them.
“We’re all like, baby V, baby Isha, baby Lyn… We all want the baby to be named after us,” she joked.
There has been no official announcement by mother Serena, who attended the French Open yesterday as a spectator. Pregnancy hasn’t stopped the Australian Open champion from travelling. Prior to this week, she was also spotted at the Monaco Grand Prix.
At the age of 35, Serena intends to return to tennis after giving birth. The American is currently one major title away from equalling Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 singles titles. In a recent interview with Ubitennis, coach Mouratoglou believes there is a “99% chance” that Serena will return to action.
“I would say 99% yes.” He responded when asked about if Williams will return. “When she called me to announce that she was pregnant, the first sentence was ‘I am pregnant’, but in the same sentence she said ‘I want to be back.’”
Serena and her fiance, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, are expecting their child later this year.
