The women’s draw saw defending champion Garbine Muguruza survive a scare against Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit, prevailing 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2. Home favourite Kristina Mladenovic enjoyed a smoother performance with a 68-minute triumph over Sara Errani.
Petra Kvitova’s dream return to the tournament came to an end after she lost a tightly contested two-set match against Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Kvitova was playing her first tournament since November after being injured in a knife attack.
