Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic has ended his partnership with coach Carlos Moya after a year working together.
Raonic began collaborating with the former world No.1 at the start of the 2016 season. Moya has been one of three instrumental figures that has guided Raonic on the tour. Besides the Spaniard, he has also been supported by current coach Riccardo Piatti as well as a brief partnership with John McEnroe.
“Thank you to Carlos Moya for helping me tremendously this year, alongside my team, to get the best out of me. Under Carlos’ direction and tutelage I have played my best yet to date. We will no longer be continuing our coaching relationship, but remain close friends. I wish him all the best.” Raonic wrote on social media.
There has been no comment regarding the reason for the departure of Moya. During the ATP Finals in London, the 40-year-old spoke highly about Raonic’s development over the past 12 months on the tour.
“I was expecting a season like this. I’ve had a lot of faith in him and I thought he was a player who’s not very far from reaching his full potential. This year, he’s been very consistent, except for the stretch from September to October, but that is normal too.” Moya recently told atpworldtour.com.
This season Raonic achieved his best grand slam performance by becoming the first Canadian man in history to reach the final of the Wimbledon championships. On the ATP tour, he achieved a win-loss of 52-17, winning one title at the Brisbane International. Ending the year by reaching the semifinals at the year-end championships in London, Raonic is currently at a ranking high of third in the world.
With no information regarding Raonic’s future intentions with his coaching team, it is unclear as to what will occur post-Moya. Italian coach Piatti is set to continue working with the 25-year-old.
The Canadian is set to start his 2017 season in the Middle East, where he will participate in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in December. He will then travel to Australia to defend his title in the Brisbane Open.
