Juan Martin del Potro’s and Federico Delbonis’ remarkable comeback on the final day of the Davis Cup has sealed Argentina’s place in Davis Cup history.
Edging out Croatia 3-2 in Zagreb, Argentina has won their first title in the team tournament, becoming the 15th country in history to achieve the accolade. Many Argentines has portrayed the achievement as a dream come true after the country settled for runner-up on four previous occasions and looked set for a fifth when del Potro trailed by two sets on Sunday to world No.6 Marin Cilic.
Staging the epic comeback to lift the title, del Potro and his team has made front page of almost every newspaper in their native country. Los Andes described the achievement as “the most desired glory” and Diario Hoy called the team “champions of the world.”
It isn’t just the newspapers that has gone crazy, numerous Argentinian sports figures has also joined the celebrations. These include NBA player Manu Ginóbili and Manchester City fotball player Pablo Zableta.
