After enduring a difficult summer both on and off the court, Novak Djokovic is hoping that he can once again reignite his burning desire on the tour as the season draws to a close.
Dodged by a wrist problem as well as mental struggles, the world No.1 has suffered a below-par summer. The roller coaster period began at the Wimbledon championships when the lackluster Serbian was knocked out in the third round by Sam Querrey. Since that loss, Djokovic has experienced jubilation by winning the Canadian Open and heartbreak with a first round exit at the Olympic Games. In his most recent tournament, the US Open, Djokovic was troubled by foot problems in the final as he was downed by Stan Wawrinka in four sets.
It wasn’t just the physical issues that took their toll on the 29-year-old. During an interview with Sky Sports, the 12-time grand slam champion had admitted that he had difficulty motivating himself after winning his maiden French Open title. Nevertheless, Djokovic hopes to put those negative feelings behind as he embarks on Asia.
“To be honest I am looking forward to finding the freshness and peace of mind of enjoying sport and enjoying being on the tennis court,” Djokovic said about the remainder of his season.
“Somehow I lost it along the way after Paris and the French Open. I felt that over the last couple of months it was difficult for me to re-engage myself.”
2016 has by no means been a complete failure for the Serbian, who currently has seven titles to his name (including two grand slam trophies). Reflecting on his performance so far this year, the world No.1 is maintaining an upbeat tone.
“It’s been another great season and it is not over. Now I am looking forward to Asia and competing again, hopefully healthy.” He said.
Ahead of his Asian campaign, Djokovic has been in the French city in Nice helping promote a new tennis academy alongside Serena Williams. The school is the work of Williams’ coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, who hopes to create future success in his home country with the development of young players.

Djokovic is set to return to action in the first week of October at the China Open. He will be aiming to win the title for the fifth consecutive year in a row and his seventh since 2009.
