Andy Murray has vowed to keep fighting for his country’s Davis Cup title defence after enduring a roller coaster eight hours of competitive tennis within the past two days.
The world No.2 has suffered heartbreak at the hands of Argentine favourite Juan Martin del Potro before grabbing revenge alongside his brother in the doubles event in just over 24 hours. Once again displaying his dedication to the team tournament, Murray’s admirable efforts doesn’t come without its consequences.
“It was tough because I didn’t know how I would feel when I woke up.” Murray said after his five-hour epic on Friday.
Embracing the crowd in his home city on day two of the Great Britain-Argentine encounter, the 29-year-old didn’t appear on court to be suffering too much from his physical investments, but not the same can be said away from the limelight. Receiving intense treatment from his Physio in order to prepare for another crucial match on Sunday, the seemingly invincible Brit admitted that he has reservations about how his body will hold up on the third consecutive day of play.
“I will give it my best effort tomorrow. Whether I win or not, I don’t know. I can definitely guarantee that I will give my best effort to win. Hopefully I can and make it (the tie) interesting.”
The stakes couldn’t be any higher for him on Sunday with a loss resulting in Britain losing the tie to Argentina. Once again the Wimbledon champion finds himself carrying the hopes of a nation. Nevertheless, Murray is refusing to be downbeat about what the future beckons for him in Glasgow.
“I’m not going to be the fresher of the players going into the match.” He candidly admitted. “I will be tired. I have to accept that, deal with it and try to play the match on my terms if possible.”
Under the current schedule, Murray is expected to play Guido Pella in what will be the first meeting between the two. If he wins, the tie will be taken to a decisive fifth set. British captain, Leon Smith, has pledged to be ready if the situation arises as he remains coy about which player he will nominate.
“I have a good idea about what will happen.” Smith said. “We will talk about it tonight as a group and sort out what’s happening as quickly as possible so that we can go ahead with preparations.”
Murray’s match against Pella will get underway on Sunday in Glasgow at 14:00v GMT.
