Pablo Carreno Busta has won his first ATP title after battling from behind to defeat Roberto Bautista Agut 6-7(6), 7-6(1), 6-4, in the final of the Winston- Salem Open.

The 25-year-old Spaniard looked destined to settle for the runner-up position after training by a set and a break to his more high-profile rival. Despite going behind, Carreno Busta battled his way back with the help of a impressive service performance in the final set. The Spaniard only lost three points on his serve in the decider.

“This is amazing. This is my first ATP title, and this is an amazing feeling,” Carreno Busta said. “I worked very hard to be here. Now I have (to) enjoy this moment and continue from this win.”

During the final, the world No.49 produced 45 winners compared to 27 unforced errors to seal the match after two hours and 33 minutes of play. In comparison Bautista Agut’s winner-error ratio was 26-38. It was a disappointing outcome for the second seed, however, he is maintaining a positive outlook on his current form.

“I had many chances to get closer to the win today but I didn’t [take] the chances,” Bautista Agut said. “I didn’t play well when I was set and break up. Tennis is like this, no? When you have the chance and you don’t [take] it, then you lose.”

This season Carreno Busta has already made his mark on the tour by also reaching two ATP Finals earlier in the year in Brazil and Portugal. He has also won 11 Challenger titles in his career. The latest triumph has left Carreno Busta beaming with confidence ahead of the upcoming US Open, where he will play Belarus’ ILya Ivashka in the first round.

“I’m 25. I have years to make my tennis (better), but I think we are working well and I’m happy with my team, my coaches and my fitness coach,” Carreno Busta said. “I’m happy in general with my life.”

Following his run this week, Carreno Busta is projected to rise inside the world’s top 40 for the first time in his career. He is the sixth player this season to win their first title on the ATP Tour.
