Tomas Berdych has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming US Open after being diagnosed with appendicitis.
The 30-year-old was diagnosed with the condition in Cincinnati, where he lost in the third round to former US Open champion Marin Cilic earlier this week. Following the diagnoses, he will travel back to Europe to receive treatment and rest.

Appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix. It is a condition that can strike anybody, however, people aged between 10-30 are more likely to get it. Usually the best treatment for the condition is surgery, when the appendix is removed.
Berdych’s absence from the US Open ends his run of 52 consecutive appearances in major tournaments. The last time a grand slam occurred without Berdych was the 2002 Wimbledon championships.
The setback comes shortly after the Czech hired Goran Ivanisevic as his new coach. Berdych has a win-loss record of 30-14 this season, but is yet to win a title. One of his best results was on grass when he reached the semifinals at the Wimbledon championships.
It is not the first time that a tennis player has been troubled by the condition. In 2014 Rafael Nadal also underwent surgery for appendicitis and was forced to skip the ATP World Tour Finals in London.
