Angelique Kerber’s dream of becoming world No.1 could be turned into a reality this week if she triumphs at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

Following Serena Williams’ withdrawl from the event due to shoulder inflammation, the Australian Open champion has the chance to replace the 34-year-old at the top of the rankings if she wins the title this week. The prospect of ending her nemesis three-year reign as the best of the world is both exciting and daunting. Nevertheless, Kerber has pledged to keep her focus on the court and not the points.

”There’s a long way to go,” Kerber said in Cincinnati. ”I’m not thinking about that. Somebody told me about that, but I’m trying not to listen.
”Everyone dreams about being No. 1. It would be amazing. I would give everything to reach that goal.”

Kerber’s surge in form is a big improvement on this time last year. Within the past 12 months, the 28-year-old has won her first grand slam title, two WTA trophies and a Olympic silver medal. She was also a runner-up at the Wimbledon championship. Reflecting on her recent achievements, Kerber has pledged to live in the moment as she bids to continue her fine run.

“One year ago I was a little bit far (from the top), I was still in the top ten, but a lot of things have changed this year.” The world No.2 said.
“It’s a little bit crazy, but it’s a great feeling. So many positive things have changed and I am trying to enjoy every moment.”

There is still room for improvement in Kerber’s game, but in a mental way. Supported by her team, the German is trying to increase her mental toughness on the court.

“You have to learn from matches you loose and matches you win. You have to have people around you that knows the situation.” Kerber said when asked about her mental game.

Kerber is hoping to begin her Cincinnati campaign on Wednesday. The tournament is currently behind schedule after being hampered by poor weather on the first two days. In her first match, the world No.2 will play either Kateryna Bondarenko or Kristina Mladenovic. Mladenovic leads her first round match 7-6(1), 1-0, before proceedings were halted due to rain.
