Bernard Tomic’s hopes of winning his first title of the season at the Los Cabos Open has been crushed following a 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4, loss to Serbian player Dusan Lajovic in the second round.
The world No.20, who was seeded second in the Mexican tournament, was unable to find a solution to Lajovic’s consistent serve as he exited the match in just under two hours. It is the first time that the Australian has lost his opening match at a tournament since the Rome Masters in May.
Following his defeat at the tournament, Tomic has refused to be negative and has already switched his focus to next week’s Cincinnati Masters.
“Lajovic played good. I knew it was going to be tough and he deserved to win today. There is nothing I could do. I have to get ready for Cincinnati masters now, I will start tomorrow to practice.” Tomic said.
Tomic wasn’t the only big name to leave the ATP 250 tournament. Another casualty was fourth seed Sam Querrey, who suffered a 7-6(1), 6-3, loss Colombia world No.137 Santiago Giraldo. Giraldo will now play in his first ATP quarter-final since the 2015 Gstaad Open.
“I had a great game, I felt comfortable on court. I knew he had to handle my serve and make the most of every opportunity with his serve in order to win. I am happy with the win. I am having a tough year with a lot of disappointments, but I feel physically ok and expecting the best”. Giraldo said about his win.
Top seed Feliciano Lopez avoided the losing fate of other seeded players by producing an impressive win over rising star Reiley Opelka. Fending off four break points, Lopez sealed the win 6-3, 7-6(3), against the 18-year-old, who reached his maiden ATP semifinal at last week’s Atlanta Open.
“Players like Reilly are not easy to defeat, but I used the opportunities I could.” Lopez said about his performance.
“I’m happy with this result. Tomorrow I will play my game and be aggressive, the level is high so I will not be confident.”
Lopez will play French veteran Julien Benneteau in his next round. Benneteau booked his place after dismissing Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos in three sets.
Croatian third seed Ivo Karlovic booked a quarter-final showdown with Marcel Granollers after surviving a roller coaster second round match. The world No.24 edged out German qualifier, Mischa Zverev, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
