As Rafael Nadal ponders his participation in the Olympic Games, world No.56 Carreno Busta has already been named as a potential replacement for the former world No.1.

Nadal is set to play in the singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles in Rio. The hectic schedule for Nadal is a huge task for the Spaniard, who hasn’t played a match since the French Open due to a wrist injury. Due to the current state of his wrist, media reports have suggested that the 2008 Olympic champion might skip the singles draw and focus on the doubles.

If this scenario occurs, Nadal will be replaced in the draw by Carreno according to El Desmarque. The 25-year-old, who reached a ranking high of 43 last year, has never played in an Olympic Games before. Carreno has already reached two ATP finals this year in Estoril, Portugal and Sao Paulo, Brazil. He is yet to win an ATP title, but has 11 Challenger trophies to his name.

It is unclear as to when Nadal will make a definite decision regarding his Rio plans. He will begin training at the Olympic venue on Monday and a decision will be made based on his performance. The nine-time French Open champion hasn’t competed in the Olympic games since 2008 after missing the London Games due to a troublesome knee injury. This year, Nadal will be the flag bearer for his country during the opening ceremony.

Coincidentally Carreno is not scheduled to play a tournament until the Cincinnatti Masters in two weeks time, working out perfectly if he is required to fill in for his compatriot.
