Frenchman Gael Monfils and Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic will lock horns in the final of Citi Open in Washington after the duo cruised past their respective semi-final opponents.
While the second-seeded Monfils needed exactly an hour to dismiss rising star Alexander Zverev of Germany 6-4 6-0, Karlovic, the No. 13 seed, put up a clinical performance to clinch a 6-4 6-4 conquest of local hope Steve Johnson in a 78-minute encounter.
Having lost both the finals played this year (in Rotterdam and Monte Carlo), Monfils will look to end his title-less streak this year when he meets Karlovic for the fifth time in his career on Sunday.
The two are locked up at 2-2 in their past career meetings on tour.
As for the 6’11” Karlovic, who broke Johnson once each in both sets, will aim to pocket consecutive titles, having also triumphed in Newport the preceding week.
Meanwhile, the men’s doubles final will see second seeds Daniel Nestor and Edouard Roger-Vasselin cross the swords with the unseeded pairing of Lukasz Kubot and Alexander Peya.
