The main draw of the Rogers Cup has been announced.
This year the Canadian Open, which is played on outdoor hard, takes place in Toronto, a week before the Olympics in Rio.
After a lot of withdrawals, first seed and 2012 edition’s champion Novak Djokovic is followed by second seed Stan Wawrinka (world’s number five) and third seed Kei Nishikori. Home star Milos Raonic has the fourth seed, and may face Djokovic in the semifinals. The potential quarterfinals are Djokovic-Berdych, Raonic-Goffin, Cilic-Nishikori and Thiem-Wawrinka.
Lots of possible outsiders are in the draw: Americans John Isner, Steve Johnson and Jack Sock played well in Washington and can play their best tennis on this surface, while Australian Nick Kyrgios and French Gael Monfils can be dangerous opponents for everyone. The oldest player in the draw is 37 year-old Ivo Karlovic from Croatia, while the youngest is Canadian 17 year-old Denis Shapovalov.
Some of the best first round matchups see the wild-card Frank Dancevic taking on the American Sam Querrey and Ivo Karlovic facing 18 year-old Taylor Fritz. Karlovic and Querrey will take advantage of their huge serve, but Dancevic and Fritz will be tough to break as well because of their offensive game. Also, wild-card Shapovalov will play Kyrgios in a very interesting meeting, and Serbian Viktor Troicki will play the South African giant Kevin Anderson.
Last direct acceptance is Japanese Yuichi Sugita who got in after the late withdrawal of Spaniard Albert Ramos.
