Philipp Kohlschreiber’s scratchy run at the German Open in Hamburg came to an end after the top seed suffered a stunning 1-6 6-0 7-5 loss to Renzo Olivo in the quarter-finals.
Kohlschreiber, the local favourite, never found his foot going at the homecoming event. The German star was made to toil in his first round encounter against Carlos Berlocq before he rallied from a set down to pip little-known Nicolas Kicker in the second.
On the contrary, the 153rd-ranked Olivo had shocked former Top 10 player Mikhail Youzhny and higher-ranked Maximo Gonzalez en route the last-eight stage. He next takes on third-seeded Pablo Cuevas.
Cuevas put up a clinical performance on serve, firing 12 aces to pull off a 7-6 6-1 conquest of Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu. The Uruguayan seed dropped just three points on first serve as he needed just 79 minutes to set up a date with Martin Klizan.
The seventh-seeded Klizan completed the semi-final line-up with a 6-4 6-3 victory against Spain’s Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
