In order to compensate for the lost matches due to incessant rains at the All England Club, the Wimbledon officials have announced that the play will be continued on Sunday.
The tournament has a tradition of holding no play on mid-Sundays to not only provide the players with some rest heading into the second week, but also to let the grass courts recover before the crunch matches.
However, the custom is set to take a beating for only the fourth time in the history of the tournament, having previously happened so in 1991, 1997 and 2004.
“There will be play on Middle Sunday. Details announced 1pm tomorrow,” read a tweet from Wimbledon. “All tickets to be purchased in advance online, none available on day.”
According to BBC, it is expected out of the move that at least eight singles matches will be held on Sunday, besides the carry-forwards from the Saturday’s play, if any.
