It isn’t very often that Novak Djokovic is relegated to court 1 at Wimbledon, but today’s blockbuster line-up will justify why this has happened.
Centre Court action will start with one of the most anticipated second round clashes of the men’s draw, two-time champion Stan Wawrinka against former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro. The clash will be del Potro’s first match on the premier court since his semifinal loss to Djokovic at the 2013 championships after spending a lengthy time away from the tour due to injury. A lot has changed for both men since their last meeting at SW19 in 2008 with del Potro’s injury woes and Wawrinka’s high profile wins. Currently the Argentine leads the head-to-head 3-2, however, the last time he played Wawrinka was in 2012. The Swiss fourth seed has the slight edge, but del Potro won’t go without a fight.
Following the Argentina-Switzerland clash will be top seed Serena Williams against Christina McHale in what could be a tough test. The 34-year-old was taken to three sets by McHale earlier in the year at the Miami Open. Then at the Rome Open, Williams enjoyed a smoother victory over the world No.65, but was still taken to a tiebreak in one of those sets. The top seed is expected to come through her second round match, however, it will most likely be far from straightforward for the defending champion.
Last but not least, Roger Federer faces another British underdog in his third round match. Dan Evans booked a showdown with the 17-time grand slam champion after brushing aside Alexandr Dolgopolov in straight sets. With the exception of Andy Murray, Federer hasn’t lost to a British player on the tour since Tim Henman at the 2004 Rotterdam Open. The Swiss is expected to come through, but don’t be surprised to see him drop a set on his way against the extremely talented Evans. If Evans can reproduce his form from the second round, this will without a doubt be Federer’s biggest test in the tournament so far.
Court 1 will see the return of Venus Williams to the main stage following her court 18 experience. The eighth seed will be seeking revenge against Daria Kasatkina following her shock loss to the Russian in Auckland at the start of the year. The disparity in experience between the two is massive. This year marks Williams’ 19th appearence at the grass-court major compared to Kasatkina’s first. On paper, Williams should clinch the match, but a shock could be on the table if the Russian is playing at her best.
Novak Djokovic will be looking to claim his ninth tour win against America’s Sam Querrey. It will be the first meeting between the two since the 2014 US Open where the world No.1 took the win in straight sets. Querrey’s sole win over Djokovic occurred at the 2012 Paris Open and the chances of the fast-serving American picking up his second at the All-England Club will be slim. Then again, anything is possible in grand slam tennis.
Completing proceedings on court one will be a battle between two big servers, Milos Raonic and Jack Sock. During their second round matches, Raonic fired 25 aces past Andreas Seppi compared to Sock’s 17 he put past Robin Haase. It is almost certain that at least one of the sets will go to a tiebreaker. The Canadian currently leads Sock 7-1 in the head-to-head and expected to win given his recent surge in form on the grass.
On the outside courts, Nick Kyrgios plays Dustin Brown in the battle of the showmen. Expect to see some stunning shots during the match with at least one of them attempting to do a tweener shot. Two-time champion Petra kvitova faces Ekaterina Makarova, Kei Nishikori plays Alex Kuznetsov and Angelique Kerber will be battling against compatriot Caroline Witthoeft.
