The rumors of Rafael Nadal and Garbine Muguruza joining hands for the mixed doubles event at the Rio Olympics gained momentum after reports concerning the Spanish duo’s confirmation surfaced across the local news channels.
According to TVE News, both Nadal and Muguruza have spoken to and agreed upon partnering each other. The final decision, however, will only be taken after the consent of the country’s Fed Cup and David Cup captain Conchita Martinez.
Meanwhile, Nadal is racing against time to get in shape ahead of the sport’s mega-event after being sidelined from the French Open and Wimbledon due to a wrist injury. His entourage, however, is hopeful of the Spaniard getting fit in time for Rio.
Muguruza, on the other hand, is in the form of her life, having pulled off her maiden Grand Slam singles crown after getting the better of World No. 1 Serena Williams en route to French Open glory earlier this month, which also saw her rise to No. 2 in the world.
Should all go well, the Spanish pairing of Nadal and Muguruza will join some of the other star doubles players at the Games including Switzerland’s Roger Federer and Martina Hingis and India’s Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna to name a few.
