There has been a trend among the current crop of tennis players to hire former stars as their coaches.
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has Boris Becker by his side, Roger Federer has worked with Stefan Edberg in the past, and Andy Murray rejoined hands with Ivan Lendl just ahead of the Wimbledon.
However, outspoken Australian Nick Kyrgios seems no big admirer of this mounting vogue as he ruled out being the latest addition to the bandwagon.
“These guys (coaches) are only there to complement and keep them (players) on track and maybe say a few things, here or there,” the 21-year-old was quoted as saying by Fox Sports. “Those guys (players) are always going to be good players, doesn’t matter who you get.”
Providing further elucidation with regards to Murray’s choice to rehire Lendl, Kyrgios insisted that no matter whom the Brit brings in, his game will continue to be as “ridiculus” as it is at the moment.
“No matter whom Andy (Murray) brings in – the guy could bring in a guy off the street (and) – he would be able to play at a ridiculous level,” he opined.
Meanwhile, Kyrgios is currently tuning up for the Wimbledon Championships at the Queen’s Club in London, where the World No. 19 has been slated to lock horns with the ninth-ranked Milos Raonic of Canada in the opening round.
