Highly respected coach Julien Hoferlin, who worked with some of the biggest stars in Belgian and British tennis, has passed away at the age of 49.
Throughout his career Hoferlin spent time working with the British and Belgian Davis Cup teams. During his five-year stint with the British LTA, he worked with players Dan Evans and Johanna Konta. After finishing his work with the LTA in 2014, he was hired by the Belgian tennis association as a consultant.
Hoferlin was the captain of the Belgian Davis Cup team between 2006-2008. During his two-year period as captain, he guided Belgium to a place in the 2007 World Group quarterfinals. He also captained the Belgian Fed Cup team.
In recent time, Hoferlin had been suffering from cancer, undergoing an operation for a brain tumor in November. During the Davis Cup final, both Great Britain and Belgium united to express their support for Hoferlin.
“I’ve known him (Julien) since I was five and he has been much more than just a coach to me,” Belgian player Steve Darcis said last November during the Davis Cup final.
The announcement of his death has sparked a bombardment of tributes from those who have collaborated with Hoferlin during their careers.
