Second seed Caroline Wozniacki has finally kicked-off her campaign in the Monterrey Open with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Olga Govortsova of Belarus.
The match was scheduled to get underway on Tuesday before it was postponed due to rain at the Mexican tournament. The clash between the two players was their first meeting since the final of the 2010 Amelia Island Championships.
The former world No.1 got off to a strong start as she broke the world No.83 two consecutive times to swiftly open up a 5-0 lead. Govortsova managed to prevent the bagel by finally holding her service for the first time in the match but it did little to disrupt Wozniacki’s momentum.
Taking the opening set after just 31 minutes of play, Wozniacki encountered a testing start to the second set. Dropping her service for the first time in the match, the Danish No.1 trailed 2-0 before staging an impressive comeback. The world No.22 broke Govortsova three additional times to give her the chance to serve for the match. Closing out the match was far from smooth for Wozniacki. She was forced to save two break points before sealing the match on her second match point.
During her 68-minute victory, Wozniacki converted 5/8 break points and won 65% of her first service points. Awaiting the second seed in the next round will be 1999 Wimbledon semifinalist Mirjana Lučić-Baroni.
Due to the delay of her first round match, Wozniacki will now have to play a match every day to win her first title of 2016. The 25-year-old has won 23 WTA titles in her career, however, she is yet to win a title in South America.
Shortly after her first round win, Wozniacki had her photo taken with a little local girl.
