Fresh uncertainty about Nick Kyrgios’ ability to participate in the Davis Cup has arisen following confirmation that he is suffering from a virus.
The fitness of the world No.27 has recently been questioned following his withdrawal from the Dubai Tennis Championships due to problems with his back and hip. Following his loss in Dubai, Kyrgios admitted that he have been troubled by a hip injury as well as illness.
“I had a bit of a hip injury at the start of Marseille. That was still sort of bothering me a little bit. I have been feeling so bad every day, like I’ve got some viral infection, as well.” The 20-year-old said last week.
Kyrgios was due to travel to Kooyong today to start training with the team ahead of their Davis Cup clash with the USA, however, it has been confirmed that he will delay his attendance due to a virus. Team captain Lleyton Hewitt has told Kyrgios to rest and stay home to avoid him spreading the illness to other members of the team. In a report published by Tennis Australia, Hewitt has said that the 20-year-old is being troubled by illness and not his hip or back.
“At the moment he’s taking it easy and trying to get over it 100 per cent,” Hewitt told Tennis Australia.
“I didn’t want him around the boys if he’s a bit infectious. It’s precaution more than anything.
“The back and hip don’t seem to be a problem which is very good good news”. An Optimistic Hewitt added.
The latest development comes at a worrying time for Hewitt’s first tie as team captain. Bernard Tomic is also dealing with issues concerning his wrist. Discussing the problem, the Australian has revealed that the issue has been troubling him ever since his match against Andy Murray at the Australian Open.
“It’s OK … I haven’t pulled out anywhere. I’ve pushed through it. It’s tough to say if I’ll be at 100% but there’s not going to be a lot of rallies … it’s going to be a lot of quick points”. An honest Tomic said.
“I’m very happy the way I’m playing and I think I’ll be very ready for sure on Friday.”
Despite the recent concerns, Hewitt has remained confident about Tomic’s and Kyrgios’ ability to play in the tie.
Australia’s encounter against the USA at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club will get underway on Friday.
