The last match of the Day 5 at Delray Beach Open was a big test for Juan Martin Del Potro, who faced the first Top 50 player since his comeback in Jeremy Chardy. Many question marks were hanging over the Argentine, as he cited exhaustion in his yesterday’s match against Smith. Del Potro however did not shy away from the task as he continued his streak of not dropping a set since the comeback, beating Chardy 6-2 6-3.
Juan Martin Del Potro is continuing his straight set win streak after the match against Jeremy Chardy. There were many questions raised by the Grand Slam champion after his yesterday’s match, where she cited fatigue. Del Potro Juan+Martin+Del+Potro+Sydney+International+UCTm3mUhnF2lwasn’t looking the freshest during the match, hitting the forehands nowhere near the best of his abilities. However Chardy did help him a lot, showing below average service games and missing returns into the doubles alley. Both players were holding their serves relatively comfortably until 3-2 from Del Potro’s point, when Chardy got himself a 0-40 situation, serving two double faults. He managed to save 2 of those, but Del Potro took the third break point. Chardy once again got himself down on the serve, this time 15-40, saving 3 set points before finally giving in on the second advantage for Del Potro. First set started off with a comfortable hold, but after that we saw a ‘unicorn’, when both players broke each other at 0. Chardy was once again down 0-40, but this time got two of the break points back before losing the game and being 1-4 down in the second set. After 3 grueling service games with deuces in each of them, including all together 6 break points and one match point for Del Potro at 5-2 on Chardy’s serve. Del Potro lost that game, but managed to serve the match out immediately next chance he received, at 5-3.  What made such a big difference in this match was definitely quite a bad performance from Chardy, winning only 36% of points on his second serve, and 27% on the return. Del Potro’s backhand seemed pretty okay, better than against Kudla. However there were still some unnecessary sliced backhands, and the topspin backhand was usually pushed back into the court and it’s far from being a weapon.
